Canines turned in or picked up that have unknown owners are considered stray; Strays are housed in isolation for five (5) days to give the owners an opportunity to claim them. Fees are charged for reclaiming a stray canine, which include standard impound fees as well as any additional charges for administered vaccines and services.
If the dog has not been microchipped or licensed for the year, additional fees will apply. For second and subsequent offenses, if the owner has chosen to license instead of microchip but has not purchased a current license, they will be charged both a failure-to-license fine and the licensing fee.
After five (5) days, unclaimed canines become property of the Madison County Animal Shelter. Adoptable canines turned in by owners and canines belonging to the Madison County Animal Shelter can be adopted Monday-Friday – Friday 11:00 AM to 4:15 PM
