Microchipping or Dog Licensing

Effective July 1, 2025, Madison County Ordinance 2025-005 requires that all dogs in Madison County be either licensed annually or microchipped and registered with the Madison County Department of Animal Care and Control.

While annual licensing is available, microchipping and registering your dog offers a one-time alternative that satisfies the same legal requirement.

Shelter Release Policy

All dogs leaving the Madison County Animal Shelter, whether adopted or reclaimed by their owner, will be microchipped prior to release. This applies even if the dog is simply being returned to its original home. The $25.00 microchipping fee will be applied at pickup.

Mandatory Microchipping or Pet Licensing

Effective July 1, 2025

To support animal identification, control overpopulation, and assist with returning pets to their owners, all dog owners in Madison County must comply with one of the following requirements:

Microchipping

$2500One-time Fee
  • You must microchip your dog either by purchasing the service from the shelter or submitting proof of microchip registration from elsewhere. Proof must be provided to the Animal Shelter.

Pet License

$2500Annually
  • Valid from July 1 through June 30 of the following year
  • Licenses are available in person at the Animal Shelter or online through the county website

Why Identification Matters

This program helps identify stray dogs, reduce overpopulation, and ensure pets are safely returned to their owners. Having accurate information, whether through a license or a registered microchip, gives Animal Control officers the tools they need to reunite pets with their families quickly.

Why is a License A County Law?

Licensing or microchipping your dog is required by Madison County law to help protect pets and their owners. Both methods provide proof of ownership and ensure that accurate information about your dog and your contact details are kept on file. This makes it easier for animal control officers or concerned citizens to quickly identify and return lost or stray dogs, reducing the chance your pet will be impounded or remain lost. Ultimately, these identification methods help keep our community safe and support responsible pet ownership.
